
Muscle is a clinical signal: the overlooked opportunity in companion animal care
Muscle loss is often treated as an inevitable consequence of ageing or illness. In reality, it can be one of the earliest and most meaningful signals that an animal’s needs are changing.
The disappearing patient
Muscle loss rarely announces itself dramatically, but more a small and steady display of patterns. Jumping into the car requires hesitation, then help. A dog or cat may weigh almost the same as before, while the functional tissue beneath that number has already begun to disappear.
Conventional monitoring often centres on body weight, appetite, and the visible progression of disease. But an animal can lose muscle while maintaining weight through changes in body fat or fluid. Conversely, weight loss can be wrongly interpreted as a simple calorie problem when the underlying process is more complex.
Ageing, reduced activity, pain, inadequate nutrient intake, inflammation, cancer, organ disease, endocrine disorders, and recovery from surgery can all affect the body’s ability to maintain lean tissue. Several processes may be operating at once.
When muscle is lost, the animal’s physical world becomes smaller.
Sarcopenia, cachexia, and the importance of distinction
Sarcopenia generally describes the progressive loss of muscle mass and function associated with ageing. Cachexia is more closely linked to underlying disease and altered metabolism, often involving inflammation and the loss of lean tissue even when food is being provided.
In practice, these processes can overlap. An older animal with chronic disease may be affected by age-related decline, reduced appetite, inactivity, pain, and disease-driven metabolic changes simultaneously. This distinction matters because the response often cannot be reduced to feeding more food.
An animal that is eating less because of nausea, oral discomfort, pain, medication effects, fatigue, or altered smell perception requires a different approach from an animal consuming enough energy but still losing muscle. Equally, increasing calories without considering protein quality, digestibility, palatability, underlying disease, and physical function may change weight without addressing the tissue that matters most. Muscle loss should therefore be treated as a clinical signal.
From weighing animals to understanding them
Body condition scoring helps assess body fat, while muscle condition scoring evaluates muscle over areas such as the spine, shoulder blades, skull, and pelvis. Used together, they provide a more complete picture than weight alone.
Owners see their animals every day. They notice changes that may be invisible during a short appointment:
Taking longer to stand
Slipping more frequently
Avoiding stairs or furniture
Walking behind rather than ahead
Struggling to maintain posture while eating
Becoming tired during grooming or toileting
Losing interest in activities that require physical effort
These observations can become useful longitudinal data. A photograph taken from the same angle, a record of weekly weight, a simple mobility diary, or repeated muscle condition assessments can reveal a trajectory that a single measurement cannot.
The future of muscle care may be built as much around detecting direction as measuring severity.

The opportunity for veterinary nutrition
Nutrition has an important role, but it must be framed honestly.
There is no single nutrient capable of resolving every cause of muscle loss. The meaningful opportunity lies in developing targeted nutritional systems that fit alongside diagnosis, veterinary treatment, pain control, physical rehabilitation, and appropriate activity.
Depending on the animal and the underlying condition, nutritional priorities may include adequate energy intake, highly digestible protein, an appropriate amino acid profile, essential fatty acids, micronutrient sufficiency, manageable portion sizes, and formats that remain appealing when appetite is fragile.
Palatability is not a decorative feature in this context. A technically impressive formulation has little value when the patient refuses it.
Texture, aroma, serving temperature, ease of swallowing, dose volume, digestive tolerance, and compatibility with the animal’s existing diet all become part of product performance.
This creates an opportunity for a new generation of nutritional support designed around the realities of illness, rather than the assumptions of healthy feeding.
Products for vulnerable animals should be easy to introduce, easy to administer, and realistic for owners already carrying a significant emotional and practical burden.
Designing around function
The most useful outcome may not always be a larger number on the scales.
For an older or chronically ill animal, success might mean standing without assistance, walking comfortably into the garden, maintaining posture at the food bowl, recovering more effectively after treatment, or preserving enough strength to continue a treasured routine.
These are functional outcomes. They connect physiology to quality of life.
They also suggest a broader model for innovation. Rather than positioning muscle support as a bodybuilding proposition for pets, it can be understood as part of maintaining independence, dignity, and resilience.
That changes how products are formulated, how evidence is collected, and how benefits are communicated.
The strongest future solutions will not overpromise. They will identify a defined nutritional need, establish how the intervention fits within clinical care, and measure outcomes that matter to the animal and family.
Seeing decline earlier
Muscle wasting represents one of the clearest opportunities for earlier, more integrated support in companion animal health. It sits at the intersection of nutrition, ageing, oncology, rehabilitation, chronic disease, and palliative care. It is visible enough to monitor, meaningful enough to affect daily life, and complex enough to demand more than a simplistic answer.
It is to understand the biological process more precisely, identify where nutrition can genuinely contribute, and create support that works within the imperfect reality of caring for a vulnerable animal.
